Introduction

History of United Methodist Open Door, Inc.

United Methodist Open Door began in 1967 as United Methodist Urban Ministry of Wichita, Inc. by a group of Methodist clergy and laity who felt that the church should be more responsive to the advocacy needs of our society. In 1981, as the country entered a severe economic crisis and deep cuts were made in many social programs, United Methodist Ministry became more involved in direct service to the members of the community. In 2007, the agency changed its name to United Methodist Open Door to better reflect its purpose and mission.
